Announcements

I wanted to write to mention a few things about our Digital Photography class together this fall.

First, if you want to order the textbook online or look for a used copy, here is the information: Ben Long, Complete Digital Photography, 7th Edition (Cengage, 2012) ISBN: 1285077261.  http://amzn.com/1285077261

Second, I've been asked what kind of camera will be needed for the class.  You will need regular, weekly access to a digital SLR. Specifically, the camera must meet the following criteria: 6 MP or larger and the ability to manually set all of the following: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance and focus. (Most point and shoot digital cameras won't work for this class - however, if you have one that allows you to control these features, you're welcome to use it).

Milligan has four digital SLRs and tripods that can be checked out. However, with 20 in the class, it is strongly recommended you borrow or purchase a camera so you will have regular and dependable access each week to the needed equipment. There are many excellent DSLRs on the market today; a generally recommend either Nikons or Canons. But there are other options as well. Be sure if purchasing new camera equipment online that you deal only with reputable dealers such as B&H Photo and Adorama. For trustworthy and extensive camera reviews, go to www.dpreview.com. In addition to the recommended camera, you'll need a SD card as required by your camera (2 GB will do).  Even if borrowing one of the school's cameras, you'll need to provide your own SD card.

Third, I will soon be sending out invitations to join our class photo blog, this is where we'll post our weekly homework assignments/masterpieces for all the world to see. When you receive the invitation, you'll need to register with Blogger.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the class.  I'm looking forward to it--and hope you are too!

Some DP Links to Check Out...

Rarindra Prakarsa from Indonesia shares some truly amazing and inspiring golden hour work.

Nikon and Canon both have online tutorials for using their cameras. These are very helpful for those just starting out.

The camera-specific user forums at dpreview.com are good sources of advice and information. Even if you aren't inclined to join the conversation, you can learn a lot by just 'listening in.'

BTW...If any of you have a gallery (or blog, Flickr or Picasa Album) that you regularly post your best work to, please email me and I'll put your link on the blog.

Looking ahead: August 2013
In your first post, you will do three things...

First, link to a photo in a professional photographer’s gallery and a specific photo that you like and tell us what makes it compelling to you. (Post only the link, not the photo). I've listed some galleries below for your consideration (you aren't limited to these).
Next, tell us why you take pictures and what kinds of photos you most enjoy taking and why.
